Bandelion, I.I.E. (the Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble) and guest collaborator T-Bird Luv bring the radically inclusive Tongues/Gather works to Southern California for special preview performances April 25 and 26 @ 8pm.

From summer 2013 to summer 2014 Eric Kupers will be directing the research period, creation, and performance of a new work, Gather, to be performed as a companion piece for the revival of Tongues.  Gather will explore the nature of birth, to complement Tongues’ investigation of facing one’s death. It will be a piece completely reliant on the body itself–using no props, instruments or set pieces.   The work will be created with and performed by the IIE, Bandelion and a host of diverse collaborators.

More info or to pre-pay: carolguidry.com or 661-618-6181

Franklin Method Dance Conditioning is practiced by dancers from Julliard to the Royal Ballet School to elicit lasting and rapid improvement to their balance, flexibility and strength by developing the body’s natural strategies for stabilization through dynamic alignment, as opposed to tension.

Classes include brief demonstrations of anatomy and bio-mechanics using anatomical models and common objects to create vivid and accurate images of what bones and muscles do in movement. Exercises for embodying one’s bio-function can include ball rolling, elastic band exercises, self-massage, mental simulation of movement (MSM), and movements from ballet and yoga. Embodying the anatomy improves physical awareness, proprioception and consequently function. Though the workshop focuses on many muscle and joint overuse symptoms that dancers commonly experience the workshop content can be applied to any form of exercise and is suitable for any level of fitness. Elastic bands, balls and other props provided.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Strong, Supple and Springy Spine
  • Psoas-Activating Your Inner Core
  • Relax Your Neck, Liberate Your Shoulders
  • The Art & Joy of Diaphragmatic Breathing

Hope to see you there!

Vintage Hollywood showgirls meet the Middle East! Orientalist paintings come to life through Classical and Modern Bellydance pieces inspired by paintings, costume design sketches, and cheesecake art from the Industrial Age up to the Golden Age of Classical Bellydance (late 1800s – 1960s). Harem Girls and Femme Fatales presents fantasy images created during this time that portray dancers/models as mythically dangerous, sexy femme fatales. Each costume is an exact replica from the painting handcrafted and designed by artistic director Melanie Lane. Featured soloists/guest choreographers include Janelle Issis, a top contestant and first Bellydance competitor from hit show So You Think You Can Dance, and Jayna Kouzouyan touring dancer with Bellydance Superstars.

Live paintings done during the show by Ninyshka Designs!

Artistic Director/Choreographer – Melanie Lane

Singer/Songwriter brings something extra to Live Arts Los Angeles

Saturday, May 18 at 7 pm
$15 general, $12 students and seniors

Musician and essayist, Jason Luckett brings an evening of song, story and movement to the boulevard, Saturday, May 18, when he performs at Live Arts Los Angeles. A singer and guitarist, Jason’s work celebrates the cultural richness of Los Angeles, and this performance continues his effort to bring music out of clubs and into venues where a more intimate dialogue may occur. Recently, Jason has performed at Highways in Santa Monica, the Los Angeles Central Library as part of the ALOUD series, and locally in a residency at the Left Coast Wine Bar in which he and his invited guest artists create a musical salon. Percussionist Ossie Mair and dancer Haize Hawkins will accompany Jason at LALA.

Supporting six albums and three independently released EPs, Jason regularly tours the United States and Europe. He’s performed at South by Southwest in Austin, TX and Glastonbury Festival (UK), and has shared the stage or recorded with Tracy Chapman, the Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell and members of Bauhaus and Red Hot Chili Peppers. His latest disc, The Second Half of the Bet (Hope Again), moves organically through folk, jazz, rock and world influences, while retaining the strong personality of what Jason calls “miscegenated soul.”

At LALA, Jason will perform selections from his recent releases, preview new material and will incorporate pieces excerpted from recent shows exploring the lives of Emmett Till, Gil Scott-Heron and others.

“I’ve participated in LALA’s holiday programs the past couple years and love the energy that Karen and Jennifer have created, so I’m very excited to put together this evening of new music and collaborations with their support.”

Advanced tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for students and seniors and can be purchased from jasonluckett.com or jasonluckettlala.brownpapertickets.com.
